In search of slightly less well known places to camp? Here are some of the hidden gems revealed by members:

Luisa G: "I enjoy camping at Montana De Oro in Los Osos, CA. A beautiful combo of mountains against the cliffs of the ocean."

Christine F: "North Manitou Island, MI. You have to take a ferry from Leland to get there. No vehicles allowed. Backpackers only."

Johnny F: "San Mateo beach. It's nice and secluded from the highway. A 20 walk or hike to the beach front that is quiet too."

Carter W: "My favorite spot to camp is Chain O lakes State park! It is great all year long for the family."

Becky B: "Anywhere near the Alabama Hills. Desert skies and waking up to the sunrise on Mount Whitney, you just can't beat it."

John M: "My favorite camping location is on long lake of the Lakeville placid trail in Adirondack Park in NY."

Katrina T: "The base of Mt. Shasta at Deadfalls Lake in California!"

Thomas P: "My favorite camping location is in the Thousand Islands. The park is named Wellesley Island State Park, in New York."

Alejandro M: "Big Bear, CA. I do a running camp there for a week in the summer. Gets me acclimated for hard training back at home, plus I get to enjoy the beautiful forest."

Deanna K: "James Island County Park - Charleston SC. I know, it's not high on a mountain top or on a sandy seaside beach, but this Park's amenities and close proximity to so many other places to explore gives it a 5 star rating in my book! The Park features tent camping, overflow "rustic" camping and even has cabins. The Park is full of hiking, biking and jogging trails - wooded and marsh front, Splash Zone water park for the kids, a rock climbing wall, paddle lakes, green spaces galore, fishing and crabbing dock, and even the dogs have a huge lake front dog park! Within 5 minutes from Folly Beach for the surfside activities and 15 minutes from Downtown Charleston for the urban/shopping/nightlife activities. There is even a CARTA bus that can take you to and fro to both destinations!"
